Second Years, Lesson One

Noel was reading over some of the homework assignments from the first years, figuring to start with it right away. But than the second years began to walk in the classroom and he put the assignments beside him on an pile, to focus on this class. He than stood up and welcomed them with an friendly smile. When everyone was inside he closed the door with an easy wave of his hand. And took an good look of the group of students he had in front of them. '' Hello everyone and welcome back to another year of Defence Against the Dark Arts.'' He was sure the students could tell by now that he was an different face than previous year. So he would explain and introduce himself for them. ''For the ones who forgot. My name is Noel Waldgrave. And I’m your professor for Defence Against the Dark arts for the upcoming years.'' He than explained making sure he watched the students in the eye. He didn’t had to go through the rules, since it must be clear by now for the second years, and they knew the fundamental basics of the Dark Arts.

He than walked towards the middle of the classroom and continued. '' In this semester we will talk about a variety of prank-like curses and jinxes. Like the Jelly-Leg Curse and the Trip Jinx, for example. In addition to that, we will also be handling the counter-spells for these prank-like curses and jinxes.'' He than saw some exciting faces but some seemed to be hoping for more than talking. '' And ofcourse that means that you will be practising these in class yourselves.'' He than said and gave an small playful wink as suddenly some seemed to be very excited and smiled. He than paused and walked back to the front to stand there. He than turned to the blackboard behind him and looked back to the class for an moment. '' I will be using the blackboard behind me to write things down. I would advise you to write along with me.'' He paused an moment to let the people who hadn’t already take their stuff could do that now. He than turned around to the class. '' So, who can tell me the definition of a curse or a jinx?'' He than asked while looking around. And pointed at an person close. And smiled and nodded approvingly as the student answered. ''Very well.'' He said and gave them a smile. And turned towards the blackboard to write the good definition down. Than moved on turning to the class again. ''And who can tell me the difference between a jinx and a curse?'' He than asked, choosing an different student in the back to answer. And than gave an friendly smile as they gave their answer. '' That’s right, good job.'' He than replied. Satisfied with it he writed it down on the blackboard. And looked at the students to see when he could continue.

He than let the blackboard for what it was for now and leaned at his desk. '' Next week we will practice our first jinx.'' He than dropped and knew they would be excited, most of them than at least. He would let them know next week that he didn’t want fooling around. For now he let them be excited. As he looked at the time, he figured it was time to close it off. '' The time is almost up. For homework, I want everyone to write down the names of three jinxes and three curses, and write down the effects of each jinx and curse. It has to be turned in before the start of next week’s class.'' He told them and made sure that, that messenge was clear. He than gave them an friendly smile and went sitting down at his desk. And dismissed the class, to return to the first years homework.

Please review the DADA Class Policy for first through fourth years.

Morrie slumped into the chair with a heavy sigh, her expression a reflection of her mood. Christmas had been a total drag and now she was back at this dreary school surrounded by people she hated. She leaned back, crossing her arms over her chest, her eyes narrowing in annoyance when she was expected to write stuff down, urgh. She let out a long suffering groan, her shoulders slumping even further as she reluctantly reached for her quill. She hated writing with quills and didn't understand what was wrong with a biro. She wrote down a few words, not enough to have covered everything, then at the end of the lesson, left the classroom to go be miserable some place else.

Kyousuke had enjoyed his Christmas break spending the time studying. It was important to always be ahead, after all. He therefore felt like he had a pretty good idea of what was going to be brought up in defence against the dark arts class. Settling in, he readied himself to take notes and for the class to start. He raised his hand to answer the first question. "A jinx is a spell used primarily to make fun of people, they aren't seriously harmful," he said. Kyousuke paid attention for the rest of the lesson, excited to be trying out a jinx. He took note of the homework, and went on his way.

Jinxes:
Jelly-legs jinx. Makes people's legs collapse.
Leek jinx. Leeks sprout from a person's ears.
Stinging jinx. Stings the person affected.

Curses:
Babbling curse. Makes person affected babble whenever they try to speak.
Flagrante curse. Causes anyone who touches an object to be affected as though touching something very hot.
Imperius curse. Makes the person affected do whatever the person casting the spell wants.

Aroha had had a great break - her siblings were growing so fast now she didn't get to see them so often. It was a little bit isolating, being away from them but she felt refreshed from spending time with them. She entered the defence against the dark arts classroom, taking a seat and wondering if it'd be another introductory kind of lesson. Her suspicions were confirmed, but Aroha didn't really mind. She still wasn't confident in her wand, or her ability to make it work properly. It seemed to be obeying her more now but she didn't see why that couldn't just change again. It's like her wand was temperamental or something. She didn't know the answers to the questions so Aroha didn't raise her hand. Instead she just sat back and relaxed, watching the class and not really taking any notes. Next lesson they'd actually be doing jinxes, which honestly made Aroha a little nervous. She left the classroom though still in a good mood, despite her doubts.

Apolline had been thinking about her electives all christmas break. She knew it wouldn’t matter too much what she picked, that she’d be able to figure out things around it, if a career path that she wanted cropped up, but truly she wasn’t sure about what she wanted. The gryffindor knew she had time, that this decision about her electives was in this semester, but that she didn’t have to make it immediately upon returning to the school. She was getting her things together,, gathering up the different things she needed for the day ahead and then headed out of the dorm and to class.

Apolline walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took the same spot in the room as she had in the previous year. Thankfully no one had tried to take her spot. She took out her notes and books as the professor re-introduced himself to them. She glanced at the front as he continued and began writing down what the professor was saying about prank-like curses and jinxes. She considered the question about when something was a curse or a jinx and was pretty impressed by what some of the other people in the class said to it. She didn’t get picked to answer. Eventually the lesson was wrapped up and Apolline packed up her things and headed out of the room, with a note of the homework.
